Emergency Physicians Group Case Study
![]()
Profile
Emergency Physicians Group serves the residents of Salt Lake County through the Emergency Room at St Mark's Hospital. As part of the HCA Healthcare Corporation this 317-bed hospital conducts over 45,000 ER visits annually.
Challenge
With the concerns mounting, including a competitor's promised new facility nearby and the escalating costs, Emergency Physicians Group knew that there was a much needed review of their workflow and billing processes to increase efficiency and bolster revenue.
Solution
Through Med USA's Integrated Partner Programs of Med USA and AVIA Code, workflow processes that would simplify and increase efficiency were proposed. Demographic information is downloaded from HCA's information systems directly to Med USA. Charts would be scanned to AVIA Code where they would be coded and sent to Med USA within 24 hours. Med USA then would checks all claims for errors using their proprietary Scrubbing Technology and submit the clean claims to payers within 24 hours.
Results
Emergency Physicians Group began to see an immediate improvement in workflow. The time from which services are rendered, to charges being submitted to the payers dropped substantially, from 34 to 7 days. This workflow solution in itself created an instant one-time cash flow increase of 66% of the normal monthly revenue.
Overall there has been a 20% increase in monthly revenue due to the Integrated Partner Programs. By working seamlessly together Med USA and AVIA Code were able to work with the physicians to obtain optimal documentation. This created increased E & M levels that were not previously coded correctly. Another benefit of accurate documentation was the capture of additional services that were overlooked before.
The integration of Med USA and AVIA Code allows for automation in many points of the billing and coding processes. Due to this automation and simplification, Emergency Physicians Group benefited by a reduction in their overall cost of billing and coding.
